Consecutive Interpreting Service

In Consecutive Interpreting Service, the speaker’s message is conveyed in the target language when the speaker pauses in between his speech, usually at the end of every paragraph or few sentences. This means the interpreter has to listen to the discourse first and then interpret it into the target language after the speaker has finished speaking. Thus,  a key skill in consecutive interpreting is note-taking. The interpreter is allowed to take notes and record ideas while the speaker is talking to ensure that the message conveys without any loss of details.

Consecutive Interpreting service is more appropriate for settings of a smaller scale event, such as business meeting, discussions, site visits and, etc. In the event of consecutive interpreting services for a big group, the use of interpreting equipment is recommended.

Tips:
Buffer additional time for your event if you require Consecutive Interpreting Services as your event can be twice as long due to the interpretation.

Client: Y company

Event: Business meeting

Needs: Business meeting with Japanese partners who speak only Japanese while the representative of Y company speaks only English

No. of delegates: a small group of 2-3 Japanese representatives

Solution:

Scenario A is a typical scenario for consecutive interpreting. Consecutive interpreting service is the most efficient interpreting method when only two languages are being used (usually English and one other language). It requires no equipment or  booths. However, if meetings involve 2 or more languages, consecutive interpreting will be less effective. In these cases, you need simultaneous interpreting (refer to Scenario B).

Client: Z company

Event: Business meeting

Needs: Business meeting with their Chinese, Japanese and Korean partners who speak only Chinese, Japanese and Korean respectively. Meanwhile, the representative of Y company speaks only English.

No. of delegates: a small group of 2-3 representatives from each country group

Solution:

Using scenario B as an example, it will take 3 times longer to get the message across (on top of the normal consecutive interpreting) for the multi-languages to be interpreted. Therefore, for this scenario, simultaneous interpreting is the most effective interpreting method.
